About Palmer Creek Fruit LLC
Our fruit is grown on the family farm of Tim and Susie Kreder in rural Yamhill County in the Willamette Valley outside of Dayton, Oregon. Tim and Susie live on the farm and raised their three children here, who continue to be active participants in farming operations. Their family’s involvement in farming in the Willamette Valley spans multiple generations. The Kreders are committed to farming practices that are sustainable for a family farm and that preserve the health and fertility of the land for future generations.
Our fruit is harvested when it is at the peak of its flavor and tastiness. Blueberries and blackberries are a nutritious part of a healthy lifestyle choice. They are high in anti-oxidants, phytonutrients and vitamins.
Currently we grow several distinct varieties of both blackberries and blueberries. The Marionberry blackberry, originally developed locally by Oregon State University in 1945, is known for its sweetness and tartness. We also produce Boysenberry blackberries, which are a large maroon berry, possibly a cross between a blackberry and a red raspberry or Loganberry, and which made Knott's Berry Farm famous.
We grow eight varieties of blueberries, which are picked between July and August every year. Generally the varieties ripen in order of Duke, Reka, Bluecrop, Bluejay, Berkley, HardiBlue, Draper and Legacy.
We recently added rhubarb and anticipate a limited first harvest in the Spring of 2016. We are also experimenting with black currants.
In an era of food-borne illnesses and consumer concern with the levels of synthetic pesticides used by modern agriculture, we are dedicated to producing fruit that is safe. Palmer Creek Fruit Company is actively seeking less toxic alternatives to the conventional pesticides used to protect fruit from insects, such as the Spotted Wing Drosophila fruit fly. Though we are not a certified organic farm, we make use of organically-certified fungicides and miticides, crop nutrients and locally-sourced traditional manure fertilizer. We minimize as much as possible the use of chemical sprays on our fruit.
Our workers receive training in food purity and safety to ensure our berries are not exposed to harmful bacteria during the harvest. Our berries are picked by harvest machines that are washed every day. We have established raptor perches for birds of prey to reduce vole and gopher damage, and we use electronically-generated bird distress broadcasters to harass the flocks of starlings that damage the fruit as it ripens.
Palmer Creek Fruit Company maintains Global GAP certifications, which is a third-party audit providing accountability for the quality and safety of our cultivation practices, soil and water conservation, harvest practices, worker safety and training. We are also kosher certified and have had our fruit processed in kosher-certified facilities.
